Thallus ±closely attached, mostly forming distinct rosettes, 2––7 cm wide, disintegrating, brittle especially towards centre. Lobes 2–3 mm wide, regular and spreading at margins, contiguous, somewhat overlapping; branching subdichotomous or irregularly toe-like. Upper surface pale grey, smooth or faintly roughened, convex, matt, ±lightly pruinose especially towards lobe ends and vesicular outgrowths. Upper side of cavity lightly tomentose, whitish at tips becoming purple-brown-black in older parts. Perforations ±evenly dispersed, laminal, 0.5–1.2 mm wide, level with lobe surface; margins not or slightly depressed. Soralia few to abundant, marginal, occasionally laminal, ultimately forming elevated, efflorescent, rounded or irregular clusters 1–2 mm wide; clusters often ±confluent. Soredia fine, greenish white. Apothecia rare, adnate or subpedicellate, concave to ±flat, 2–3 mm wide; disc matt, red-brown, not or lightly grey-pruinose. Ascospores 2 per ascus, 40–50 × 25–35 µm; wall 2–4 µm thick. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: medulla K+ orange, C-, KC+ orange, P+ orange; atranorin (cortex), stictic, constictic, norstictic (trace), menegazziaic acids and accessory substances; no pigments. | ||
Endemic to Australia and found in W.A., S.A., Vic. and Tas. A species of dry sclerophyll vegetation occurring on bark (mostly Acacia), rarely on rocks; persists on isolated trees in pasture and along roadsides. | ||
